Large‑scale eradication of Japanese Knotweed, Floating Pennywort and Giant Hogweed across 87 contamination areas at Belvedere Industrial Estate, delivered using the FAST System and specialist treatment programmes.
Large‑Scale Multi‑Species Eradication Across 87 Contaminated Areas
IVM was commissioned to deliver a full invasive species remediation programme across the Belvedere Industrial Estate in Kent. The site contained 87 individual contamination zones affected by Japanese Knotweed, Floating Pennywort and Giant Hogweed. Due to the scale and distribution of the infestation, the project required a structured, multi‑phase approach, environmental compliance, and coordinated delivery with several partner organisations.
Our team carried out detailed mapping, species identification and risk assessment before implementing a tailored eradication strategy using the FAST System for Knotweed and specialist treatment programmes for Pennywort and Hogweed. The project was delivered while maintaining safe access for estate operations and ensuring full compliance with environmental legislation.
Project Overview
Location: Belvedere Industrial Estate, Kent
Site Type: Large multi‑use industrial estate
Species Identified: Japanese Knotweed, Floating Pennywort, Giant Hogweed
Extent of Works: 87 mapped contamination areas
Stakeholders: London Borough of Bexley, Northwest Kent Countryside Partnership, Environment Agency
The Challenge
The Belvedere site presented several challenges, including multi‑species contamination, dispersed infestation zones, and the need to maintain operational continuity across the estate. Giant Hogweed required strict safety controls, Floating Pennywort posed watercourse risks, and Japanese Knotweed required long‑term eradication planning. Coordinating works across 87 locations demanded precise scheduling, environmental protection measures and close collaboration with multiple agencies.
Our Solution
IVM deployed a multi‑method eradication strategy. The FAST System was used across all Japanese Knotweed areas to deliver rapid biomass reduction and predictable long‑term control. Floating Pennywort was treated using controlled herbicide application and water‑safe techniques, while Giant Hogweed was managed through specialist stem injection and PPE‑controlled operations. All 87 areas were GPS‑mapped and logged into the site’s invasive species register, with a 4‑year monitoring programme included to ensure full eradication and compliance.
Outcome
• Complete eradication of all invasive species
• FAST System applied across all Japanese Knotweed zones
• Specialist programmes for Floating Pennywort & Giant Hogweed
• 4‑year monitoring package for long‑term compliance
• Successful multi‑agency coordination and on‑time delivery
