Combined excavation and FAST System herbicide treatment for construction, development and large residential sites.
Combined Excavation & FAST System Herbicide Treatment
Integrated On‑Site Treatment is a hybrid approach that combines controlled excavation with the IVM FAST System herbicide programme. Knotweed‑affected soils are excavated from construction‑critical areas and relocated to a designated receiving zone elsewhere on the site, where long‑term herbicide treatment is carried out safely and effectively. If you're unsure whether the plant on your land is Knotweed, our guide to Knotweed Lookalikes can help you confirm before taking action.
Nearly Two Decades of Specialist Knotweed Management
Since 2007, we have delivered excavation, relocation and long‑term herbicide programmes across the UK. Our team supports developers, contractors, surveyors and homeowners with a method that allows construction to proceed immediately while maintaining full regulatory compliance. If you’ve just discovered Knotweed and aren’t sure what to do next, our guide on What To Do If You Have Knotweed provides a clear step‑by‑step overview.
How Integrated On‑Site Treatment Works
The process begins with targeted excavation of Japanese Knotweed from areas where construction, groundworks or landscaping must proceed without delay. Instead of transporting the material off‑site, the excavated soils are moved to a controlled receiving area within the same property boundary.
Because excavation fragments the rhizome system, the relocated material requires a structured herbicide programme to ensure long‑term suppression. The receiving area is treated using the IVM FAST System over a three‑year period, allowing multiple growth cycles to be targeted and ensuring the rhizomes lose viability over time. All herbicide works are carried out by operational staff holding PA1, PA6 and PA6AW pesticide application qualifications, ensuring safe, compliant treatment across residential, commercial and near‑water environments. You can learn how herbicide treatment compares to excavation in our guide to Excavation vs Herbicide.
Once the three‑year programme is complete, the treated soils must remain on site permanently. They are typically incorporated into soft‑landscaping areas well away from buildings, or used to form landscaped bunds on completed sites.
Where Integrated On‑Site Treatment Is Most Effective
This method is primarily used on construction and development sites where:
• Groundworks must begin immediately
• Full excavation and off‑site disposal is unnecessary or too costly
• A suitable non‑construction area exists for a receiving zone
• Long‑term herbicide treatment (typically three years) is acceptable
• Space allows for safe, compliant relocation and monitoring
Integrated On‑Site Treatment can also be used in large residential gardens where sufficient space exists for a designated treatment area.
Benefits of Integrated On‑Site Treatment
• Allows construction to proceed without delay
• Reduces excavation and disposal costs
• Minimises vehicle movements and environmental impact
• Includes a structured three‑year FAST System herbicide programme
• Provides long‑term, mortgage‑compliant control
• Fully documented and PCA‑compliant
• Suitable for phased developments and multi‑stage projects
