Japanese Knotweed Case Study – Brentwood Town Hall, Essex

Multi‑area assessment and identification of three Japanese Knotweed infestations across the southern car park, followed by a structured eradication programme prepared for Brentwood Borough Council.

Japanese Knotweed Case Study – Brentwood Town Hall, Essex

Multi‑Area Knotweed Assessment & Three‑Year FAST System Treatment Programme

Brentwood Borough Council instructed IVM to undertake a detailed investigation into multiple Japanese Knotweed infestations located within the southern section of the Brentwood Town Hall car park. Our assessment identified three distinct areas of growth, including mature stands, previously treated regrowth and untreated stems reaching up to 2 metres in height. Several plants showed signs of historic but unsuccessful herbicide applications, increasing the need for a reliable, lender‑compliant eradication strategy.

Due to the public‑facing nature of the site and the proximity to pedestrian routes, the council required a structured, long‑term treatment programme that would ensure full suppression of all Knotweed growth while maintaining safe access for staff and visitors. IVM recommended a three‑year treatment plan using the IVM FAST System, designed to deliver deep‑root herbicide uptake and overcome the limitations of previous treatments.

Project Overview

Location: Brentwood Town Hall, Essex
Client: Brentwood Borough Council
Site Type: Local authority grounds / municipal car park
Contamination: Three separate Japanese Knotweed stands
Requirement: Three‑year herbicide treatment using the IVM FAST System

The Challenge

The Knotweed infestations varied in maturity and condition, with some stems showing regrowth from unsuccessful historic treatments. The plants were located across three separate areas of the car park, requiring a coordinated approach to ensure consistent suppression. The council needed a treatment method that would deliver predictable results, prevent further spread and meet the expectations of lenders and insurers for public‑sector land.

Additional challenges included maintaining safe public access, working around operational car park areas and ensuring all treatments were delivered in accordance with environmental and local authority requirements.

Our Solution

IVM implemented a structured three‑year herbicide treatment programme using the IVM FAST System. This method ensures deep‑route herbicide uptake, making it highly effective for mature stands, regrowth and untreated plants. Treatments were applied across all three infestation zones, targeting stems of varying age and condition to ensure consistent suppression.

The FAST System also provides a lender‑compliant approach, supporting the council’s long‑term management obligations and aligning with requirements often associated with mortgage‑affected properties. All works were delivered safely within the operational constraints of the car park.

Outcome

• All three Knotweed areas successfully controlled
• FAST System treatments delivered over a three‑year period
• Mature, untreated and previously treated plants fully suppressed
• Long‑term management plan completed for Brentwood Borough Council
• Site now maintained under ongoing monitoring as required
