Japanese Knotweed Case Study – Church End, Cambridge

Two‑year residential herbicide treatment and monitoring programme controlling a small, boundary‑line Japanese Knotweed infestation emerging through paving in a domestic garden.

Japanese Knotweed Case Study – Church End, Cambridge

Two‑Year Herbicide Treatment & Monitoring Programme for a Small Residential Infestation

At the request of the property owner, IVM carried out a full site assessment at a property on Church End, Cambridge. A small but active stand of Japanese Knotweed was identified in the rear garden, emerging through a paved area close to the back door and situated near the boundary line.

Project Overview

Location: Church End, Cambridge
Site Type: Residential property
Contamination: Young Japanese Knotweed shoots emerging through paving
Issue: Boundary‑line proximity & historic knotweed in neighbouring gardens
Requirement: Low‑impact eradication suitable for a domestic setting

The Challenge

The Knotweed was found growing sporadically across approximately 6m², with shoots ranging from 2mm to 200mm in height. The infestation was emerging through a paved area near the back door, requiring a non‑disruptive treatment method. Both adjacent rear gardens had a history of Knotweed, with one dead historic stem visible at the time of survey. Although no live growth was present next door, both properties required ongoing monitoring to ensure the infestation had not spread underground.

Our Solution

IVM implemented a structured two‑year herbicide treatment programme, followed by a two‑year monitoring period. This approach was selected because the infestation was young, accessible, and suitable for chemical control without the need for excavation. As part of the works, IVM also produced a lender‑accepted Knotweed Management Plan (KMP) to support the homeowner with any future mortgage or property‑related requirements. Seasonal treatments ensured effective uptake into the rhizome system, while neighbouring gardens were monitored throughout due to their historical Knotweed presence.

Outcome

• No regrowth observed during the two‑year monitoring period
• No new shoots identified in either neighbouring garden
• Paved area remained stable with no further emergence
• Infestation confirmed as successfully eradicated
• Long‑term control achieved without excavation or disruption
