Japanese Knotweed Case Study – Ipswich Household Waste Recycling Centre

Three‑year FAST System herbicide programme controlling a mature, boundary‑spreading Japanese Knotweed infestation at a live municipal waste facility without excavation or operational disruption.

Japanese Knotweed Case Study – Ipswich Household Waste Recycling Centre

Three‑Year FAST System Herbicide Programme for a Mature, Boundary‑Line Infestation

IVM carried out a full site assessment at the Ipswich Household Waste Recycling Centre on Foxhall Road, Ipswich. A mature and well‑established stand of Japanese Knotweed was identified adjacent to a service track, with rhizome spread breaching a wooden boundary fence and encroaching onto neighbouring land.

Project Overview

Location: Ipswich Household Waste Recycling Centre, Foxhall Road, IP10 0HT
Site Type: Operational municipal waste facility
Contamination: Mature Japanese Knotweed stand spreading across boundary
Issue: Restricted access & cross‑boundary rhizome encroachment
Requirement: Long‑term eradication without excavation or operational disruption

The Challenge

The Knotweed was highly mature, deeply rooted, and located in an area with limited access restricted to onsite staff. The infestation had already breached a wooden fence and begun spreading onto neighbouring land, creating a cross‑boundary contamination risk. As the site is a live waste facility, excavation was not feasible without major operational disruption.

Our Solution

IVM implemented a structured three‑year herbicide treatment programme using the proprietary IVM FAST System. This dual‑route delivery method combined targeted stem injection with foliar application to maximise herbicide uptake in a mature stand. Annual monitoring ensured progressive die‑back, containment of boundary spread, and full compliance with site access restrictions.

Outcome

• Significant die‑back achieved in the first treatment season
• Full eradication delivered by the end of the three‑year programme
• FAST System treatment used throughout
• Boundary‑line spread fully contained and reversed
• No excavation required, avoiding disruption to site operations
