Assessment and treatment of a mature pond‑edge Japanese Knotweed infestation, requiring Environment Agency approval and a structured three‑year herbicide programme delivered by PA6AW‑qualified operatives.
Pond‑Edge Knotweed Assessment & Three‑Year Herbicide Treatment Programme
Invasive Vegetation Management & Treatment Ltd (IVM) was instructed to assess and eradicate Japanese Knotweed within the grounds of Sir John Leman High School, Ringsfield Road, Beccles. A site inspection carried out identified one mature, well‑established stand located on the eastern boundary, positioned at the edge of a pond and beginning to damage the adjacent hard‑standing.
Project Overview
Location: Sir John Leman High School, Beccles, NR34 9PG
Client: Sir John Leman High School
Site Type: Educational grounds / pond‑edge habitat
Contamination: One mature Japanese Knotweed stand
Requirement: Three‑year herbicide treatment with Environment Agency approval
The Challenge
The Knotweed was located directly beside a pond, creating additional environmental constraints and requiring strict compliance with watercourse regulations. The stand was mature, well‑established and had begun to cause structural damage to the hard‑standing that borders the pond. Treatment could only be undertaken by operatives qualified to apply herbicides near water and required formal approval from the Environment Agency.
Our Solution
IVM completed and submitted an AqHerb01 application to the Environment Agency to authorise herbicide use adjacent to the pond. All works were carried out by IVM operatives holding the PA6AW qualification, enabling safe and compliant treatment near watercourses. A structured three‑year herbicide programme was implemented, targeting the mature stand and preventing further encroachment into the pond or damage to surrounding hard‑standing.
Outcome
• Knotweed stand successfully controlled over the three‑year programme
• All treatments completed under Environment Agency approval (AqHerb01)
• PA6AW‑qualified operatives ensured full compliance near the pond
• Structural damage to the hard‑standing prevented from worsening
• Site now maintained under ongoing monitoring as required
