Reduced‑dig excavation and root barrier installation for a residential development site. IVM achieved a 95% reduction in contaminated soil removal under PCA‑accredited supervision.
This Wolverhampton case study showcases how our Japanese Knotweed excavation and root barrier installation methods deliver reliable, PCA‑accredited remediation for residential and commercial sites. As one of the UK’s leading Japanese Knotweed specialists, IVM provides cost‑effective solutions that minimise waste, protect neighbouring land, and keep development projects moving without delay.
Reduced‑Dig Excavation & Root Barrier Installation
IVM delivered a PCA‑accredited reduced‑dig excavation and boundary root barrier system for a residential development site in Wolverhampton. The project achieved a 95% reduction in contaminated soil removal compared with Environment Agency guidance.
Project Overview
Location: Wolverhampton, WV6
Site Type: Former allotments redeveloped into 8 flats
Client: Property developer
Contamination: Two Knotweed stands (approx. 75m² and 5m²)
Additional Risk: Knotweed present in neighbouring gardens
The Challenge
The site contained established Japanese Knotweed, threatening the construction programme and requiring a remediation strategy that minimised waste removal while preventing reinfestation from neighbouring properties. Similar challenges are common across the Midlands, including our work in Birmingham and Derby.
Our Solution
IVM supervised a reduced‑dig excavation programme. Environment Agency guidance suggested around 1100m³ of contaminated soil would need removal. Through expert methodology, this was reduced to just 45m³ — a 95% saving in soils leaving site.
To protect the development from external Knotweed sources, a PCA‑approved
root barrier system
was installed along the boundary.
Outcome
• Site cleared and ready for construction
• 95% reduction in soil disposal volume
• Significant cost and waste‑handling savings
• Long‑term protection from neighbouring Knotweed
